Student Health Insurance

Understanding Public vs. Private insurance for your studies abroad.

Health insurance is mandatory for enrollment at any university in Germany and most EU countries. Without valid insurance, you cannot matriculate.

Public vs. Private Insurance

Public (Statutory)

  • • Flat rate for students (~€120/mo)
  • • Covers all pre-existing conditions
  • • Direct billing with doctors
  • • Mandatory if under 30 years old

Private

  • • Cheaper for young students
  • • Must pay upfront and get reimbursed
  • • Good for language students / over 30s
  • • Requires exemption certificate
